Garden Route Tour
Three days east along the coast — whales at Hermanus, the ostrich country of the Klein Karoo, the Knysna lagoon, and the forests and gorges of Tsitsikamma.
The Garden Route is the stretch of coast running east from the Cape, where the mountains come down close to the sea and the country turns green. Three days is the shortest honest way to see it.
We drive it as a road trip rather than a route march: the whale coast first, then over the mountains into the Klein Karoo, then back down to the sea for the lagoons, the forests and the gorges. Accommodation is arranged to suit your budget and confirmed with you before you leave.

Hermanus
The whale-watching capital of the coast. Between roughly June and November southern right whales come into Walker Bay to calve, and can be watched from the cliff path in town.

Mossel Bay
The start of the Garden Route proper — a working harbour town on a wide, sheltered bay with a long swimming beach.

Oudtshoorn
Inland over the Outeniqua Mountains into the Klein Karoo: ostrich country, sandstone farmhouses, and the Cango Caves in the hills above the town.

George
The largest town on the route, sitting under the Outeniqua range where the mountain passes come down onto the coastal plain.

Wilderness
Long, empty beaches, a chain of lakes behind the dunes, and indigenous forest running back into the hills.

Sedgefield
A slow lagoon town between Wilderness and Knysna, known for its Saturday markets and its birdlife.

Knysna
The lagoon town at the centre of the route, with the sandstone Heads standing either side of the channel out to the open sea.

Plettenberg Bay
A wide bay of white beaches and headlands, with dolphins and, in season, whales close inshore.

Tsitsikamma
The end of the route: indigenous forest, the Storms River mouth, and the suspension bridge strung across the gorge where the river meets the sea.
