Half to full day
Township Tour
Langa, Gugulethu and Khayelitsha with a guide who knows them — a cultural tour built around the people who live there, and a meal you will remember.
Most of Cape Town lives out on the Cape Flats, and no honest picture of the city leaves that out. This tour goes to Langa, Gugulethu and Khayelitsha with a guide who knows the ground and the people, and it is built around meeting them rather than driving past.
Expect conversation, music, craft workshops and a proper meal. We ask that photographs are taken with permission, and the money the tour spends stays in the places we visit.
Where we go
-
1
Langa
The oldest of Cape Town’s formally established townships, dating to 1927 — a place with a long political history and a strong arts and music scene today.
-
2
Gugulethu
Founded in the 1960s, and now as well known for its restaurants and its weekend braai culture as for its part in the history of the struggle.
-
3
Khayelitsha
One of the fastest-growing settlements in the country, and home to an energetic community of makers, cooks, traders and craft co-operatives.
-
4
Local cuisine
A sit-down meal on the tour — grilled meat, samp and beans, chakalaka and the rest — eaten where it is cooked rather than in a restaurant across town.
